About Us

Philosophy

threadbuilt was formed with the belief that good design principles can solve any problem and enrich our lives in new or more meaningful ways.

Our aim as a Design Studio is to take these principles and create beautiful and purposeful products that utilise modern Digital Manufacturing techniques & distribution methodologies.

We are a Design Studio that specialises in digital design / manufacturing technologies (i.e. Industry 4.0) with a key focus on Industrial / Product Design. We leverage this skillset to create physical & digital products on offer for the consumer as well as a design service for companies or individuals looking for something unique or bespoke. Please check out our Service offerings below for more information or be sure to head over to our Portfolio to get a sense of our design language and product range.

But threadbuilt is also much more than that; it serves as a creative outlet, a means to effect change and disrupt norms, an exploration in realising one’s thoughts and ideas, a reason to continue learning and growing, a desire to seek continual improvements in the everyday object and wherever possible creating a sense of intrigue and whimsy.

If any of this resonates with you or some of our designs have caught your eye be sure to subscribe to our mailing list (click the link below) to stay in the loop for product updates and special campaigns.

Dream it

As designers our dreams are often interrupted with novel ideas or solutions to problems that even we didn’t know existed, waking up to record these before they are lost to the ether - it is a state of being.

Make it

We live in an age where ideas can become reality quicker than at any stage in history, aided by revolutions in manufacturing technologies and the democratisation of information. I may not have my hoverboard just yet, but rockets are landing themselves and 3D printers are considered consumer items - this is our reality.

Methods

threadbuilt is a digital Design Studio committed to leveraging modern tools and methodologies to deliver modern solutions from conceptualisation through to manufacturing & distribution. As such we believe in leveraging Digital Design workflows and Manufacturing On Demand (MOD) techniques wherever these are fit for purpose - although we do offer digital and handmade products as well.

Manufacturing On Demand means that our products are manufactured to order and sent directly to the customer by a third party. This significantly reduces our overheads in terms of keeping stock or tooling and reduces start-up costs to bring a new product to market.

We utilise a number of product fulfilment platforms for manufacturing and distribution of our products, these often come with marketplace functions built in and initially provided a quick way for threadbuilt to get up and running. These services also allow us to explore new manufacturing techniques or product lines that would otherwise be out of reach and to ensure our products are manufactured to the highest standards. See our Fulfilment & Logistics Partners below for more detail.

Fulfilment & Logistics

We partner with the following Companies & Organisations to show, sell, manufacture and/or distribute our products.

We use SHAPEWAYS to print and distribute all of our Additively Manufactured products and prototypes

We use Printify to print and distribute a number of our Clothing & Apparel products as well as ACcessories or other Print on Demand media

We use PRINTFUL to print and distribute a number of our Clothing & Apparel products as well as Accessories or other Print on Demand media

Where else can you find us?

We began our online presence with Etsy and continue to use it as a marketplace due to the integrations it has with a number of our fulfilment partners. We also strongly believe in the ethos behind Etsy in promoting handmade goods

Tools of the Trade

Although the majority of our products are manufactured via our fulfillment partners (as above) we do still like to get our hands dirty at times. This is especially useful for the iterative design approach but also for making customised or one-off pieces.

Prusa MK3s 3D Printer

A workhorse 3D printer made by the amazing team at Prusa. This has been a benchmark printer in the industry for a number of years and it continues to improve with updates (both software and hardware) which is contrary to the usual commercial products in my experience.

It is easy to use straight out of the box and delivers fantastic results consistently, but you can really dive into the setting and tweak as you see fit if you choose to.

Shapeoko Pro XXL CNC Machine

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting in to here with a CNC machine but knew I wanted to explore subtractive manufacturing more. It is a beast and considering this shipped from the US was surprised at how well everything held up in the boxes (not a scratch), but boy oh boy was it heavy!

It is a steep learning curve when compared to 3D printing and it feels like the stakes are higher in that when things go wrong it can be catastrophic, but I have managed to make a number of items in a short period of time that I am proud of.

Creality Falcon 2 22W Laser Cutter

We are thrilled to introduce our newest addition: a Creality Falcon 2 22 W Laser Cutter. This cutting-edge tool offers unparalleled precision and versatility, allowing us to bring your design ideas to life with remarkable accuracy and speed - and boy is it fast!

Benefits of Having a Laser Cutter:

  2. Versatility: From various materials like wood, acrylic, leather, and more, a laser cutter can effortlessly cut through a wide range of materials to suit your project requirements.

  3. Efficiency: With the ability to execute complex cuts and engravings quickly, the laser cutter streamlines the manufacturing process, saving time without compromising on quality.

  4. Customization: Whether you need personalised engravings, unique shapes, or bespoke patterns, the laser cutter offers endless possibilities for customisation to make your project stand out.

  5. Prototyping: Rapid prototyping is made easy with a laser cutter, allowing us to swiftly iterate and refine designs before moving to full-scale production, saving time and resources.

Software

Fusion 360

My go-to software for all 3D modelling and design. I have used this product pretty much since its inception when it was a small community giving feedback directly to AutoDesk, never have I felt so involved in a platform’s development and more part of a community. This software is incredibly powerful and free for personal/entrepreneurial use - click here to find out more.

For those looking to purchase instead you can use my affiliate link below. In doing so you will be helping out our business and as an added incentive you will receive $50 worth of credit to your account.

Slicer Prusa Edition (PrusaSlicer)

I use this to process/slice all 3D prints for my Prusa MK3s. It is an amazing piece of software that the team at Prusa continue to improve and provide free of charge!

Carbide 3D

Carbide 3D put out multiple pieces of software; Carbide Motion to control the CNC Machine and Carbide Create to make custom designs. I am still finding my way in this space (CNC) but am enjoying using their tools thus far.
